PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

Famed singer Janelle Monae came to Portland Monday to join Don't Shoot PDX protesters for a rally in North Portland.

Monae and her band mates were at Monday’s rally at Dawson Park.

Organizers said the rally was to commemorate the anniversary of Michael Brown's death in Ferguson, Missouri, and to protest police brutality.

"You can't really just sit home and twiddle your thumbs, you gotta go out and show your support and try to tell your friends that these things are happening and all that kind of stuff,” protestor Avery Duckworth said.

"The only way it’s going to change is if people can get together and form relationships and start a movement that gets people's attention," Amanda Meyer added.

Organizers at Monday’s event also collected school supplies for local students.

According to Monae’s social media feeds, she and her band also played a free show at the Roseland Theater Monday night.
