A Portland man was arrested after police said he started a fire in his apartment, after seeing smoke from other wildfires.

Michael Downey, 29, first told police he didn't light paper and clothes hangers on fire in his apartment, located in the 800 block of NE 162nd Ave., but eventually admitted he did do it.

Downey told police he saw the smoke from wildfires and tried to start his own fire to "get rid of the smoke", according to court documents.

According to court documents, a neighbor smelled smoke coming from Downey's apartment and pushed the door open. The neighbor used water to put out the fire.

Police found a pipe and meth in Downey's apartment.

Downey was taken to the Multnomah County Detention Center and has been charged with three counts of arson in the first degree, possession of meth, reckless burning and recklessly endangering another person.
