Vancouver family honors 5-year-old girl by collecting school clothes, supplies

5-year-old Karma Albright was supposed to start kindergarten this year, and she couldn’t wait.

But the Dayton, Oregon girl was born with a rare liver condition called biliary atresia.  Her bile ducts didn’t function correctly, and through Doernbecher Children’s Hospital, she was sent to UCLA Medical Center to await a transplant.

Sadly, she didn’t survive.

“When Karma passed it was really shocking for us,” her mother’s aunt, Rachel Delaplaine, told Fox 12.  “She got an infection and that was unexpected, and they’re still not real sure how it happened.  That’s caused her mother a lot of distress, she’s having a really hard time.”

But through the pain of her loss, Delaplaine was inspired by Karma – and her excitement over starting kindergarten – to start a collection of school clothes and supplies for other students who need a little help.

“We just want, you know, some of that joy that she didn’t get to experience on her first day of school to go to some of the kids in the area that maybe are having a little bit of a hard time this year,” she added.

The Vancouver woman only got the idea a few days ago, but she’s already been overwhelmed by the response.

She said she’s already heard from 50 families who plan to come by this Saturday for clothes or supplies.

Now, Delaplaine is in need of more supplies – especially backpacks and shoes of all sizes from preschool through high school - for students who could use a little Karma.

“I almost think she’s going to be there vicariously on the first day,” Delaplaine said, choking up.  “Her memory won’t die out with us, but [this will] kind of spread a little bit of the way she lived her life.  The kid was sick but she took every day on as if it were a new adventure, a new excitement and she played as hard as the next kid.  She was a lot of fun.”
