Aloha family, Oregon City business donating water to firefighters

People around the Portland metro area are taking action to help firefighters battling wildfires around the state.

Tim and Melissa Davis are collecting bottled water for firefighters in honor of their son, Ryan Johnson. He was shot and killed in 2012, when he was in his second year of fire school.

“He was going to be a firefighter and I just kept thinking I need to do something for him,” said Melissa. “So when I came up with the idea, it was to honor Ryan. Because I could visually picture him out there, you know, helping fight those fires.”

The Aloha family got the idea on Friday, and their friends and family stepped up right way. Melissa's father bought a pallet of water for the cause.

They have already donated 129 cases of water to the Banks Fire District, where firefighters fought a wildfire along Highway 26 this week.

They’re also collecting household goods, food and water for families who lost their homes in the wildfire near John Day.“We feel like it’s paying it forward,” said Tim.

General Distributors, Inc., normally sells bottles of beer, wine or  juice. But now the Oregon City distribution company plans to donate 3,000 bottles of water to the Red Cross and the U.S. Forest Service.

One of the company’s employees, a retail account specialist, will be fighting the wildfires with the Oregon National Guard.

“So it’s not just something we’re seeing on the news but affects us at home,” Tiny Irwin, the company’s general manager, said. “We’re just very blessed to be in a position to do this.”

The Davis family has secured the donation of a semi-truck to take donations to John Day. To add your donations, you can email them or call 503-351-0353.
