An escaped inmate was back in custody Thursday afternoon, two days after the Oregon Department of Corrections said he walked away from a work crew.

Department of Corrections workers said William Beebe, 38, walked away from a 10-man crew working near Richmond Elementary School in southeast Salem at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday.

Beebe is an inmate at Santiam Correctional Institution in Salem, serving time on two counts of unauthorized use of a vehicle. The minimum-security prison houses approximately 440 male inmates who are within four years of release.

The Salem Police Department and Oregon State Police were involved in his arrest at 12:30 p.m. Thursday. The Department of Corrections did not release any other details about Beebe's location or his arrest.

Beebe's earliest release date was previously April 2017.
