Be aware of runners, walkers on area highways during Hood to Coast Relay

Posted: Updated:
PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

The annual Hood to Coast Relay race begins on Friday, Aug. 28 and Saturday, Aug. 29, with more than 17,000 runners and walkers participating.

The route of the relay will take race participants from Timberline Lodge on Mount Hood to Seaside.

The Oregon Department of Transportation asks travelers to watch out for relay participants, as well as about 3,000 support vehicles involved in the event.

Narrow construction zone on Mt. Hood:

Please use caution when approaching or passing runners, walkers and support vehicles. Some sections of the route have narrow shoulders.

Runners go through Mt. Hood Highway construction site:

The second leg of the relay will take runners through a construction site on U.S. 26 west of Government Camp where ODOT is cutting back the steep slopes along the highway to reduce rockfall. Along nearly a two-mile stretch runners will run outside of a concrete barrier with a slightly narrower shoulder. ODOT's contractor K&E Excavating will not work on the day runners are heading down the mountain for the safety of the runners. Runners are not allowed to run behind the barrier due to equipment and large rocks on the road. The speed limit in this area is lowered to 45 miles-per-hour for construction activities. If you are driving or biking down U.S. 26, please use extra caution and be alert in this area.

Lane closures on U.S. 26:

Westbound traffic on U.S. 26 near milepost 30 east of Sandy will be narrowed down to one lane approaching the top of Cherryville Hill to provide support vehicle parking. This section is on the west end of a two-mile section of center cable barrier.

Increased law enforcement:

State, county and city police agencies along the relay route will have a visible patrol enforcement presence. Anyone observing a dangerous driver should contact Oregon State Police at 1-800-853-8412 or 911.
