CASCADE LOCKS, OR (KPTV) -

A fire that evacuated several homes and burned two sheds Thursday night in Cascade Locks was caused by a bird.

Cascade Locks Fire said a pigeon shorted an electrical switch on a pole at the edge of Union Pacific Railroad property just southwest of Marine Park around 6:30 p.m.

The sparks ignited dry grass and quickly spread to the hillside.

CLF responded to the fire and were able to save an apartment house located on WaNaPa Street.

CLF said a railroad storage shed containing two propane tanks were destroyed in the fire.

Crews from Carson, Stevenson, Wy'East, Hood River, Westside, ODFW, and the US Forest Service, and an ambulance crew from Skamania County, all helped to control the fire.

About 2 acres were burned. No injuries were reported.

Several homes were evacuated but residents were able to return around 10 p.m.

CLF said the power was turned off for the whole city until utility crews were able to isolate the fire. Power to the whole city was restored around 10 p.m.
