PPB policewomen meet little girl disappointed by cop costume for boys

PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

Three Portland Police officers posed for a photo last weekend to tell a Camas girl that “girl cops are awesome.”

On Friday morning, they showed her in person.

Officers Raelynn McKay and Rashida Saunders met Kinley Goertler at Central Precinct in downtown Portland and showed the four-year-old girl how the lights, sirens and equipment in a police car worked.

Kinley wanted to buy a police officer costume at Costco over the weekend, but grew disappointed when the tag indicated the costume was for boys.

Her mom, Chelsy Goertler, explained women could be police officers, but her daughter was still sad.

McKay read Goertler’s Facebook post about the experience and gathered Saunders and Officer Nicole Miller to pose for a photo, holding a sign reading, “Kinley, girl cops are awesome!”

Kinley loved the photo, her mom said. She loved meeting the officers even more.

“I just feel like thank you doesn’t cover what they’ve done. I feel like they’ve supported us as much as we’ve supported them,” said Goertler. “They’ve made Kinley’s whole life from this. She’ll just always remember this.”

After Fox 12 reported about the Portland police picture, Kinley has received photos from women in law enforcement from 15 different states.

Her mom hopes they’ll eventually hear from female officers in every state.
