Scammers preying on people by pretending to be firefighters

Posted: Updated:

In this active fire season, scammers are preying on people's fire fears. Scammers are pretending to be firefighters to gain access to people's homes.

A 93-year-old woman said a man showed up at her Washington home claiming to be a firefighter. She believed him because he was wearing a yellow vest and carrying a clipboard.

"When I opened the door he was pointing across the street saying there's been a lot of fires around here, and so I'm checking washers, dryers, things like that."

Investigators said the man impersonating a firefighter was just a distraction.

While the man pretended to check her appliances for fire danger, an accomplice slipped inside and started stealing the woman's belongings.

Just a half-mile down the street in this community southeast of Seattle, Deputies said another man fell victim to a similar scam.

This time, the scammer was pretending to be the water district inspector.

Deputies said if you're suspicious of someone at your door, ask for ID, call to verify their employment and when in doubt, call 911.
