The Oregon National Guardsman who helped stop a train attack in Europe is back in the United States.

Alek Skarlatos talked about the attack on "On the Record with Greta Van Susteren" Friday night.

Skarlatos, two friends and a British man helped take down the armed militant on the train heading from Amsterdam to Paris.

"We both looked behind us and saw a guy entering our car with an AK-47, looking like he was trying to invoke a reaction or something like that and we both ducked down immediately and I told Spencer lets go get him."

A French-American was shot in the neck during the attack but is recovering.

Skarlatos said the gunman didn't seem to know what he was doing and they were able to stop him before anyone else was hurt.

"He put up a good fight but hes got three to four guys bigger than him, you don't stand a chance really."

Skarlatos and the other heroes were given France's highest award, the Legion of Honor for their bravery.
