Gresham Police Dept. accepting applications for Citizen Volunteers program

Posted: Updated:

The Gresham Police Department announced they are accepting applications for their Citizen Volunteers in Policing (CVIP) program.

Gresham Police Dept. will fill about 15 positions.

The volunteer citizens will become familiar with the philosophy, policies and procedures of the Gresham Police Department as they are trained to serve as additional eyes and ears in community policing, according to GPD.

Volunteer members will create a visible presence in the city’s parks, trails and residential areas.

Gresham PD said the volunteers do not carry weapons, confront suspects, nor participate in altercations; they observe and report.

Applications must be turned in by Sept. 11 at 5 p.m.

Applicants must be 21 years of age or older, live or own a business within Gresham's city limits, pass a DMV and criminal background check, and graduate from a nine-week Citizen Academy. In addition, those selected to become CVIP members will are required to be fingerprinted.

Applications are available online and may be mailed to the police department or dropped off at the department's front desk. A signed criminal background check form must be submitted with each application.

Interviews for the CVIP program will be held in September and October.
