Daycare worker gets 2 days in jail after mother says she was passed out while watching children

OREGON CITY, OR (KPTV) -

Last Thursday, Kathryn Roan pleaded guilty to criminal mistreatment two, and as part of the plea agreement the judge sentenced her to two days in jail.

Back in June, parent Jennifer Owen said she stopped into Roan’s in-home daycare to check on her 1-year-old daughter, but no one answered the door.

Owen went to the backyard, where said she found Roan drunk and passed out with young children running around the yard. Owen went inside and found her baby sweaty with a soiled diaper.

Roan, who lives in Oregon City, just finished serving her time and now can’t care for kids for two years.

Owen was not available to give a comment on-camera Monday, but in a written statement she said she had mixed emotions about Roan’s plea deal and two-day jail sentence.

“From a mother’s stand point wanting to protect her baby, it wasn’t enough,” she said in the statement. “But from a nurse with a background in addiction medicine, I agree it was appropriate. Ultimately I’m glad she will be getting help and won’t be watching other children.”

Besides jail time, the judge ordered Roan to get treatment for substance abuse. She will also be on probation for two years and can’t care for children during that time.
