HILLSBORO, OR (KPTV) -

Hillsboro Police are looking for a man who is suspected of stealing a car from a couple who posted an ad on Craigslist, by handing over a fake cashier’s check for $10,500.

Jennifer Myers and Marcus Prouty recently posted an ad on Craigslist to sell their 2006 Acura TL.

They say James Saban responded to the ad, came out for a test drive and said he wanted to buy the car.

“He gave me the story that he was excited to buy this for his fiancé, and that he wanted to surprise her with it,” Myers told Fox 12.  “He just seemed like an average nice man.”

They say the next day, Saban handed over a cashier’s check for the full amount and drove off in the car.

“I looked at it when he handed it to me and it had the water seal and everything on it it’s supposed to have,” Myers added.

But when they went to cash it they say they realized there was a big problem: it was all an elaborate scheme.

A woman answered the phone number for the credit union listed on the check, but it turns out the physical building didn’t exist.  Myers and Prouty believe the woman was a friend of Saban’s who was in on it all.

In taking the check to various banks, the couple discovered even the routing number was real.

“Even the banks, it takes them a while to sort out all the rhetoric and lies on that check,” Prouty added.

In the end, they say they learned there was nothing the bank could do.  They were out $10,500 and Saban had their car.

Hillsboro Police say he is the suspect in the case but as of Tuesday night, has not been arrested.

Public records show Saban has a criminal history dating back decades, including convictions for theft, forgery, negotiating a bad check and theft by deception.

Myers and Prouty believe they’re not his first victims.

“We need to stop this guy from committing these crimes and ruining people’s lives and taking their life savings, or their savings,” Prouty said.  “I’d like to know if there are other victims, I'd like to know if they have anything that can get this person caught and stop him from doing what he's doing."

They believe Saban intends to turn around and sell the car again.

They suggest others trying to sell cars or other large items through sites like Craigslist meet the buyer at a bank where a teller can verify the legitimacy of the payment before the buyer leaves with the car or product.

"Do we feel good about it?  No.  But I guess we’re very trustworthy people," Prouty explained.  "I didn’t see any red flags on the check.”
