VANCOUVER, WA (KPTV) -

Police report that Ike, the K-9 officer that was rushed into emergency surgery after being stabbed by a wanted man, has died from his injuries.

Vancouver officers made contact with the suspect in the area of Fruit Valley Road and Laframbois Road at 5:19 p.m. Tuesday.

A Vancouver Police Department spokeswoman said the suspect ran away and was tracked down hiding in bushes by a K-9.

The dog bit the suspect, but the man stabbed the dog.

The K-9 was rushed to Dove Lewis Emergency Animal Hospital, police said, but K-9 did not survive his injuries.

"I hate the idea, I love dogs," said Vancouver resident Don Benjamin. "It is an officer, it's just like attacking an officer, he's going to go down for a death, or an assault."

The suspect, who has been identified as Jacky Chan Karuo, 25, was taken into custody after officers used a stun gun.

Karuo was taken to Clark County Jail and booked on Assault IV DV, Harming a Police Dog and Criminal Impersonation I.

Ike's handler was Officer Jack Anderson. Police say Ike has been with the department since 2012.
