PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

The Portland Film Festival is underway with all types of reels for moviegoers, including a documentary on the return from near death of a professional wrestling icon.

Before he moved in with Diamond Dallas Page nearly four years ago, Jake 'The Snake' Roberts was over 300 pounds and slowly killing himself on a diet of hard drugs and booze.

Now the WWF Hall of Famer is clean and has been resurrected.

Roberts and Page were at Portland's Mission Theatre on Wednesday night for a special screening of The Resurrection of Jake the Snake during the Portland Film Festival.

The gritty, yet uplifting, documentary shows all of the pits of Roberts' return from severe addition. Aided after moving in to the Atlanta home of his old pro wrestling buddy, Page, who put him on his DDP Yoga plan.

Over 3 years of filming, edited 90-minutes of vulnerability, family heartache to a triumphant return of a once proud man and world-renowned wrestler.

"It gets dark sometimes man, because it was dark sometimes," said Page.

"Nobody wants to look at themselves at their very worst. You are naked and you are being a piece of crap. To look at myself and go, 'oh my God,'" said Roberts.

"It's so emotional it makes you feel so good because it's a Rocky story but it's real," said Page.

Both men worked with and befriended the late Rowdy Roddy Piper. Roberts had a special 60th birthday message delivered to the Portland wrestling icon, just days before his death in late July.

"Roddy, I just want you to know this right now brother, I will continue to 'head towards that light.' That's what he told me. We were cut from the same cloth. We all had our demons but he was a sweetheart but not always a sweetheart," said Roberts.

The Resurrection of Jake the Snake will be shown at Living Room Theaters on Southwest 10th Avenue for a week-long run beginning this Sunday Sept. 6.
