NEWBERG, OR (KPTV) -

An off-duty firefighter helped pull a neighbor to safety when a home near Wilsonville caught fire Thursday morning.

The fire started around 6 a.m. at a home on Southwest Kramien Road near Northeast Parrett Mountain Road.

Firefighters said two people were inside the home when the fire started, one of whom was able to get out safely.

Off-duty firefighter Chris Mills with Tualatin Valley Fire & Rescue learned of the fire through the PulsePoint app on his phone and, along with another neighbor, pulled a woman to safety.

One person was taken by Life Flight to an area hospital with life-threatening injuries, and the other resident suffered minor injuries.

Firefighters said there were several animals on the property, including dogs, a cat, a parkeet, ducks and geese. Two dogs died in the fire.

In all, about 70 firefighters responded to the fire, with help from Newberg and Dundee fire crews.

It wasn't immediately clear what caused the fire.
