The death of Vancouver Police Department K-9 officer Ike has inspired a different type of mutual aid.

The mayor of Washougal started a fundraising effort to help the Vancouver Police Department purchase a new K-9.

“I think it’s a natural tendency for people to want to do something and do something more than just lament how unfortunate this is,” Mayor Sean Guard explained. “And this hopefully gives folks a little bit of outlet of knowing something good came out of a very unfortunate circumstance.”

Vancouver K-9 officer Ike, a Belgian Malinois, was stabbed six times by a domestic violence suspect Tuesday evening.

The suspect, Jacky Karuo, is in jail facing a charge of harming a police dog.

Ike underwent multiple surgeries at DoveLewis in Portland, but his injuries were ultimately too severe. His partner, Officer Jack Anderson, made the difficult decision to have the dog euthanized.

“All I can think of is that dog Ike just knew what his job was and he just did it,” Guard said. “Successfully, but with a very tragic ending.”

Guard put out the call on his Facebook page Wednesday evening. He hopes to raise $15,000, which is the amount the city of Washougal recently spent to purchase a police K-9, his equipment and training.

Kim Kapp, a spokeswoman for the Vancouver Police Department, said they have not yet had a conversation about whether or not they will replace Ike. Right now the department is focused on planning a public memorial for the K-9 and supporting officer Anderson.

Kapp said if they don’t purchase a new K-9, any donations will go toward other K-9 unit expenses, such as medical bills and equipment.

If anyone would like to donate to the department, they can send a donation to the Vancouver Police Department K-9 Unit, care of Vancouver Police Department, 605 E Evergreen Boulevard, Vancouver, WA 98661.
