The Marion County Board of Commissioners have declared a drought emergency on Thursday.

The Board of Commissioners will request a state declaration from Governor Brown. If granted, Marion County will join 24 of Oregon's 36 counties receiving emergency drought declarations this year.

According to a release, local blueberry farmers asked the board to make the declaration as they sought temporary water use permits to protect newly planted stock that will need irrigation into mid-fall.

Marion County Farm Bureau testified and provided a letter of support to provide relief to the farmers.

"Although it has been cooler lately, long term forecasts are for continued dry weather. It seems prudent to provide our farmers as much flexibility as possible to temporarily adjust water rights to protect their crops," said Commissioner Janet Carlson, board chair.
