NEWBERG, OR (KPTV) -

Around 8:13 p.m. Newberg Police received several calls of shots fired in the area of Newberg High School during a soccer match.

Newberg Police Captain Chris Bolek said they believe the shots came from a neighborhood near the school.

A girl's soccer game was in progress between Newberg High School and Centennial High School.

Police said 'pop' sounds could be heard within a very short period of time and moments later, a school administrator heard a more distinctive sound as if something may have hit a set of metal bleachers on the east side of the field.

Players and bystanders were escorted into the gym while police searched the area.

Police blocked off the area for a short time.

Police Captain Bolek said officers found a "small caliber projectile" on the track near where the metal bleachers are located.

After searching the area, officers arrested Scott Smith, 53, for Unlawful Use of a Weapon, Recklessly Endangering Another Person, and Disorderly Conduct II. Police said Smith lives nearby.

The investigation is continuing and it is possible more charges may be pending.

No injuries were reported and no property damage has been located.
