TriMet, along with C-TRAN and the Portland Streetcar announced the name of the new regional electronic fare system that's being put in place around the Portland-Vancouver metro area.

The system is called 'Hop Fastpass,' and it uses re-loadable cards to pay fare on the bus, streetcar or MAX light rail. The pass will be valid on C-TRAN buses, Portland Streetcar, and TriMet buses and trains.

Rather than buying individual tickets, riders will be able to load their Hop card with value ahead of time and simply tap the card on a reader when they board. The system will also accept Apple Pay, Google Wallet and contact-less bank cards.

Cash will still be accepted on buses, streetcars and at ticket machines.

“We chose Hop Fastpass after an exciting and collaborative process that included feedback from riders,” said Chris Tucker, TriMet’s director of revenue operations and project manager for the new electronic fare system.

TriMet chose the name 'Hop' because it "conjures up both the image of a rabbit, known for being fast, and the hops that have led our region to be named Beertopia and for Portland, Beertown," the company said in a release Thursday.

TriMet crews have been laying foundation for the new e-fare system by putting in the underground equipment necessary to put the Hop card readers on stainless steel platforms.

Riders can expect to see other e-fare equipment going in on board C-Tran and TriMet buses, as well as Portland Streetcars sometime in 2016, with the system expected to launch sometime in 2017.
