PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

The Oregon Parks and Recreation Department and Washington Department of Natural Resources said Friday that they were easing the statewide bans on campfires given recent weather conditions.

The states had previously banned open flames due to extremely high fire danger.

With the cooler temperatures and rain the region has seen in recent days, OPRD and DNR decided to lift the bans and allow campfires in designated fire pits at campgrounds west of the Cascades and in the Columbia River Gorge.

In Oregon, the ban remains in place on coastal beaches, in all coastal parks south of Reedsport and in Central, Eastern and Southern Oregon.

Fires remain banned on all state-managed lands east of the Cascades in Washington.

If you're going camping and are unsure if the campground is allowing campfires, check with park staff.

Despite the recent rain, it is still fire season so campers should, as always, exercise extreme caution when lighting a fire.
