PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

Labor Day weekend has officially begun and if you're headed out of town, you're not alone.

Portland roads were packed with travelers heading out of town on Friday.

A big reason folks are hitting the road are the low gas prices.

AAA said current gas prices are the lowest prices we've seen in more than a decade. They are a dollar a gallon cheaper than last year.

Here's the breakdown of prices in the Pacific Northwest:

  • Oregon's average gas price is $2.79
  • Washington's average is $2.91
  • The national average is lower at $2.42

The reason for the drop is prices at the pump is thanks to the low price of crude oil.

Some more good news for the Labor Day weekend: you can find some great shopping deals.

Savings website fatwallet.com said you can get some great deals on summer clothing, grills and patio furniture are all on sale.

The website said it's also a good weekend to get some discounts on appliances and mattresses.
