VANCOUVER, WA (KPTV) -

A man with a long criminal history was arrested on Interstate 205 on Saturday after he attacked someone and then witnesses helped detain him until police arrived, according to officers.

Vancouver Police and Portland Police were called out to a 'moving disturbance' in a car that was northbound on I-205 from Portland.

Police said while they were en route, the car involved pulled over at the Highway 14 exit in Vancouver. A woman ran from the car and into lanes of traffic.

Witnesses stopped and attempted to help the woman, according to police.

Police said a man from the car began chasing the woman. While witnesses were trying to help the woman, officers said the suspect slapped one of the witnesses.

The man tried to flee the area but was detained by several witnesses until police arrived.

Darrell D. Classen, 26, was arrested and charged with assault and reckless endangerment.

Court records show Classen has been arrested multiple times in the past, including for charges of theft in 2009, failure to register as a sex offender in 2010 and 2012, and attempt to elude and reckless driving in 2012.
