Deputies: Longview man kills estranged wife, then tries to kill himself

Posted: Updated:

The Cowlitz County Sheriff's Office said a Longview Man killed his estranged wife and then tried to kill himself.

Deputies said a family friend invited to dinner at 295 Robertson Road arrived to find 73-year-old Cleon Moen on Sunday.

Moen told the friend he had killed his estranged wife, according to deputies. The friend left the area and called 9-1-1 at around 4 p.m..

When law enforcement arrived, Moen was not complying and was bitten by a Police K-9 and taken into custody.

Deputies said Moen had attached an exhaust pipe from his truck to an outbuilding in an attempt to kill himself.

Police found Michelle Moen's body inside the home. An autopsy was scheduled for Monday night.

Neighbors reported hearing shots fired, but investigators determined that was from someone target practicing nearby.

Cleon Moen was taken to a hospital for carbon monoxide poisoning and deputies said he will be booked into jail on first-degree murder charges when released from hospital.

Moen remained in the hospital Monday evening under guard by deputies. The sheriff's office said it was not clear how long he would be in the hospital.

Cleon Moen has been involved with authorities before. Deputies said he shot himself last November outside the Hall of Justice after a mistrial on domestic violence charges.

At that time, police said he had very serious injuries and also wrote a note outlining his marital problems and intention to shoot himself.
