'Right Footed': Documentary profiles pilot born without arms

Posted: Updated:

Jessica Cox was born without arms, but she doesn't let that get in the way of achieving her goals.

Cox is a successful pilot and motivational speaker, and Sunday she was in Portland for the premiere of the documentary 'Right Footed,' which documents her life.

Cox said her biggest challenge growing up was learning to deal with people's curiosity, since so many people would ask questions. But Cox said she was always able to stay positive and she thanks her parents for that.

"I was very blessed with great parents," Cox said. "And my mom would always encourage me. She said, 'You can do anything.'"

Cox never considered her lack of arms to be an excuse not to follow her dreams.

"I drive a car with no special modifications. A regular car, as long as it's automatic. I have learned how to scuba dive, I've learned how to surf," Cox said. "I fly an airplane with just my feet. The plane was not built specially for me."

Cox also studied martial arts and holds a black belt in taekwondo.

She now shares her experiences with people around the world as a motivational speaker.

That caught the attention of a film director, who was interested in documenting Cox's life.

The resulting film, 'Right Footed,' was chosen for the Portland Film Festival and premiered Sunday at the Academy Theater on Southeast Stark Street.

'Right Footed' recently won the honor of 'best documentary' at the Vatican Film Festival.
