AMITY, OR (KPTV) -

A father and his two young children were injured when a driver dozed off and crashed head-on into their car Sunday, the Polk County Sheriff's Office said.

The crash occurred on Bethel Road, just east of Oak Grove Road near Amity.

Deputies said Jonathan Valentine was driving westbound on Bethel Road around 11 a.m. Sunday when he fell asleep as he was entering a turn in the road. Deputies said he woke up, jerked the wheel too hard and crashed into a car headed in the opposite direction.

The driver of that car and his two children, ages 15 months and 3 years old, were taken to Salem Hospital for treatment of their injuries. Valentine was also transported to the hospital.

The 3-year-old was eventually airlifted to Legacy Emanuel Medical Center in Portland with possible internal injuries.

Updates on the victims' conditions weren't available early Monday.

Valentine was released from the hospital Sunday and cited for reckless driving, reckless endangering and second-degree assault.
