VANCOUVER, WA (KPTV) -

A witness who helped pin down a man accused of assaulting a woman on Interstate 205 said when the suspect tried to fight him off, he "put him on his face."

Police responded to reports of a "moving disturbance" on I-205 at the Highway 14 exit in Vancouver at 3 p.m. Saturday.

Officers arrived to find a group of people holding down a suspect.

Witnesses told police they saw the man hitting a woman inside a car heading northbound from Portland. Investigators said the car pulled over and a woman ran away into lanes of traffic.

A man, identified as 26-year-old Darrell Classen, then chased after her, according to police.

While witnesses were trying to help the woman, police said Classen slapped one of them.

William Byrum told FOX 12 that's when they took Classen down.

"He fought us a little bit, so we body slammed him," Byrum said. "Joey went to grab his hands and when he did that I picked him up and put him on his face."

Classen was arrested on charges of assault and reckless endangerment.

Court records show Classen has a long criminal history, including convictions for failing to register as a sex offender.

Byrum said he tweaked his shoulder and skinned up his knee during the confrontation.

"I'm not mad, it's just kind of sad because he seemed so loaded that whatever he's on, it's a waste of potential," Byrum said. "I hope he figures it out."
