A cougar sighting was reported near an elementary school in Tigard on Tuesday.

A mail carrier was the first to see the cougar around 12 p.m. near a garden area on the east side of Mary Woodward Elementary School. The mail carrier lost sight of the big cat when it walked into some blackberry bushes and onto a makeshift trail.

The mail carrier alerted the school, who then called police.

Students were being kept inside the school as a precaution after the reported sighting, according to a district spokeswoman.

Tigard police arrived, along with wildlife officials, to search for the animal. A cougar was not found in the area.

Officers stayed outside the school for the rest of the day.
