Vancouver Police host special 'Girl Cops are Awesome' event

Posted: Updated:

Many might remember the story FOX 12 told you a few weeks ago about a Vancouver girl who couldn't find a police costume for girls.

Her story got a huge response on social media and on Wednesday, Vancouver police dedicated a special event to her.

The event was called 'Girl Cops are Awesome.' It was a chance for little girls to see that women can also work in law enforcement and be really good at it.

Four-year-old Kinley Goertler wanted to be a SWAT Officer for Halloween, but her mom noticed that all the costumes were for boys. So her mom posted a picture on social media, it went viral and girl cops from around the country responded with encouraging messages.

Kinley even inspired Vancouver Police to host the event, where girls of all ages came to sit in police vehicles, meet female officers and ask questions.

Kinley's mom said it's such an important example for girls.

"It's been really good. I think a lot of girls might think this is a boy based profession and that's really true. There's plenty of women who do it too," said Chelsea Goertler, Kinley's mom.

"I think that's what Vancouver Police are trying to show that it's not just a boy club. It's a team and we're trying to show that the female officers can do just as much as the male police officers can," said Officer Danielle Wass.

Kinley's mom said the original plan was just for Kinley to come out to meet the officers and see a SWAT vehicle, but they suggested making it a community event.
