An Albany man has been charged with murdering his ex-wife after calling 9-1-1 to say he killed her, Linn County deputies said Thursday.

Deputies said emergency dispatchers first received a call from a home on Southeast Scravel Hill Road around 4 p.m. Wednesday. Dispatchers could hear someone yelling in the background and then the line disconnected.

Then, during a second call, a man told dispatchers that he had killed someone, deputies said.

When deputies arrived at the home, they encountered William Russell McDonald, 57, in the driveway.

Deputies said they found the body of McDonald's ex-wife, Vera Converse, 54, inside the home.

The Linn County Sheriff's Office didn't provide any specifics on Converse's death, only saying she had wounds that were consistent with information provided during the call to 9-1-1.

An autopsy is planned to confirm the cause of death.

Deputies said McDonald and Converse divorced in 1994, but McDonald had been living in a motorhome on the property for about five years, taking care of Converse.

McDonald was arrested and taken to the Linn County Jail on charges of murder and being a felon in possession of a firearm.
