Portland gets $4 million to process 2,000 untested rape kits

PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

Portland Police and Multnomah County received federal grant money Thursday that will help them process 2,000 untested rape kits.

In the spring, District Attorney Rod Underhill and local law enforcement leaders started applying for grants to address the problem.

They finally got the good news.

They’ll be getting two grants totaling $4 million.

$2 million will be used to test the rape kits and the other $2 million will cover costs for follow up investigations.

Underhill says this is long overdue.

“It’s a great day for the community. It’s a great day for sexual assault victims from the past – those that we need to get some answers for”, said Underhill.

Two prosecutors will be dedicated to the project and they plan to start right away.
