Brush fire prompts evacuations, school closures in Wishram, WA

WISHRAM, WA (KPTV) -

Residents in the town of Wishram were told to leave their homes Sunday night as a fast-moving fire burned closer to the small town in the Columbia River Gorge.

As of Monday morning, those 300 or so residents were allowed to return to their homes, but many areas remained under level 1 and 2 evacuation notices.

Meanwhile, schools in Wishram were closed Monday because of the fire.

The Horsethief Butte fire started early Sunday afternoon near Dallesport and quickly grew in size, fueled by winds blowing through the Gorge.

As of Sunday night, the fire was more than 4,000 acres in size.

Firefighters said no homes had been destroyed, but with winds continuing to blow at speeds of 25 to 30 miles per hour, the fire continues to grow.

The state dispatched additional resources to the area to help in firefighting efforts.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
