Clark Co. Sheriff's Office: Erratic driving suspect grabs, fires deputy's gun

VANCOUVER, WA (KPTV) -

A woman suspected of driving erratically through Vancouver was arrested Monday after deputies said she got into a struggle with law enforcement and grabbed a deputy's gun, causing it to fire twice.

Deputies said 911 dispatchers received several calls at about 9:30 a.m. regarding a person driving on Hazel Dell Avenue, running red lights and weaving in and out of traffic.

Callers said the driver also hit several other vehicles and continued driving.

Deputies spotted a car matching the description near Highway 99 and 99th Street and stopped the car by blocking it in near 99th and the I-5 overpass.

Deputies said that as they attempted to get the driver, Jessica Farias, out of the car, she fought with deputies and grabbed one of their guns, causing it to fire. Deputies said the shot did not strike anyone, no one was hurt and the gun never actually ever left the holster.

Lindsay Langley had just pulled into a nearby parking lot when she saw the commotion and heard gunfire.

“That was when I thought for a second, ‘I probably shouldn’t be standing here watching this because where is it all coming from and going?’” She told fox 12. “This is 99th Street and this is Hazel Dell, so we see activity through here every once and a while.  I’ve never seen anything like that.”

Farias was arrested on first-degree assault, disarming a law enforcement officer, felony hit and run and resisting arrest charges.

The Clark County Sheriff's Office has not released the identities of any of the deputies involved.

Editor's note: this story has been updated to reflect a change in the police report. Original reports from officers said two shots were fired.
