CASCADIA, OR (KPTV) -

A man on a camping trip fell from a steep cliff and died, according to the Linn County Sheriff's Office.

A woman called 911 at 3:55 p.m. Sunday to report the man she was with fell near Gordon Meadows east of Cascadia. The 55-year-old woman told dispatchers she believed the man had died.

Search and rescue workers responded to the scene and spotted the man, identified as 61-year-old Stephen Bass of Toledo, about 100 feet below a log landing at the base of a cliff.

A team member was able to traverse the steep slope and reach Bass, who was pronounced dead.

Due to the approaching darkness and the rugged terrain, the scene was secured overnight.

Bass' body was recovered by Corvallis Mountain Rescue and Linn County Search and Rescue on Monday.

Deputies said the incident remains under investigation.
