Wounded Army veteran receives mortgage-free home in Washougal

Posted: Updated:

An Army veteran who suffered serious injuries serving in Afghanistan now has a new mortgage-free place for his family to call home.

U.S. Bank, Freedom Alliance's Heroes to Homeowners Program and Five Brothers presented Staff Sgt. Corey Collins with the keys to his newly renovated home Monday.

It's the sixth home donated to an injured veteran through a partnership between those agencies.

Collins joined the Army Reserves in 2008 and entered active duty in the Army in 2009.

He deployed to Afghanistan in 2011 and encountered numerous explosions and firefights, resulting in a traumatic brain injury and post-traumatic stress.

Collins was awarded two Purple Hearts, the Defense Meritorious Service Medal and the Army Commendation Medal among other decorations. He was medically discharged in August 2015.

Collins and his wife Katie have a 5-year-old son.
