Medical marijuana dispensary proposed for Cedar Mill neighborhood

PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

A Cedar Mill neighborhood could soon be home to a medical marijuana dispensary.

The proposed dispensary would operate out of a home on NW Dale Avenue, near Northwest Cornell Road.

The owner planned to hold a public meeting at the home Monday evening, which is a requirement before she can submit an application to open a dispensary at the location.

Some neighbors are worried customers the dispensary will make it hard to find a parking spot on the street and cause a big increase in the number of cars driving through the neighborhood.

“The major problem here is the traffic,” Warren Mitchell, who lives near the proposed dispensary, said. “There’s a whole lot of houses back here and there’s only three ways out.”

Other neighbors said they have concerns about the nature of the business.

“A lot of the people here in the neighborhood who have kids to go to school and everything, they’re really concerned because they know it brings in a lot of traffic,” Dennis Whitten, who lives near the proposed dispensary, said. “Some of them are probably undesirable people and others probably really need the product.”

Sheri Ralston, the owner, told Fox 12 she is following the legal process to open a medical marijuana dispensary, saying she currently has no plans to sell recreational pot at the dispensary. Ralston declined further comment.

The state legislature authorized the sale of small amounts of recreational pot through medical marijuana dispensaries starting October 1.

A spokeswoman for Washington County said they have been in contact with someone regarding the proposed dispensary, but they have not received an application and have no role in the proposal at this time.

Once an application is received, the dispensary would have to meet special use criteria, county codes and provide an opportunity for public comment.

It would also have to receive a license from the state.
