Posted: Updated:

A fast-moving wildfire has burned more than 8,500 acres in Klickitat County, but all evacuation notices were lifted Monday evening.

The Horsethief Butte Fire was first reported near Oak Creek Road at 12:10 p.m. Sunday and quickly spread east toward Wishram.

Around 300 people evacuated their homes as a result of the fire. Highway 14 was also shut down between Highway 197 and Highway 97.

By 11 a.m., Highway 14 had reopened.

By Monday evening, the fire was estimated to be 70 percent contained and firefighters said all evacuation notices would be lifted.

No homes were lost to the fire, but crews are still assessing the extent of damage to outbuildings. No injuries were reported in connection to the fire.

The cause remains under investigation.
