PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

The long-awaited MAX Orange Line is officially up and running, but just how fast is it for people making the commute across town?

FOX 12 put TriMet’s 5th MAX line to the test during Monday’s evening commute, and compared travel time by car and by bus.

The results may surprise you.

People with high hopes all across town decided to give the Orange Line a whirl in its first week of operation.

“I usually take the bus, but now if I take the Orange Line, I can sleep in more and still get to work on time,” said MAX rider Chenise Wilder.

People say if they had to guess, they would says it is faster to ride the MAX instead of driving themselves or taking the bus.

“The max would win,” Wilder said.  “I’ve traveled by car before; once you get to the Ross Island Bridge, it’s packed. Forget about it.”

“I think the MAX would definitely win out, especially at a high traffic hour,” said MAX rider Heidi Weber.

At 4:45 pm, FOX 12’s Kaitlyn Bolduc hopped on board the Orange Line at Portland State University. Her photographer, Devin Eskew, drove the route by car.

It took the Orange Line 28 minutes and 56 seconds to get to the Southeast Park Station in Milwaukie. Driving by car took 23 minutes and 13 seconds. Our FOX 12 crew also rode the bus, the exact same route, just 30 minutes later.  It took them some 47 minutes and 44 seconds to complete.

Traffic appeared to be lighter than normal on Monday, and with a time difference of about five minutes between driving and taking MAX, results would likely vary based on the day.
