INDEPENDENCE, OR (KPTV) -

Firefighters putting out a garage fire in Independence spotted a large tortoise trying to escape the flames.

A passerby on the 6100 block of Corvallis Road called 911 after seeing smoke coming from a garage.

The witness knocked on the door of the home, but learned nobody was inside.

Firefighters and police entered the building and found a small fire in a makeshift livestock pen in the garage.

The bin housed a large tortoise that was attempting to flee the burning straw and melting bin, according to firefighters.

"I popped the garage door to see what was burning, and I saw the tortoise’s habitat burning," said Chad Paoli, a firefighter with Polk County Fire District #1. "It was very excited to get out of the habitat, that’s for sure."

Firefighters carried the tortoise, which its owners named "Daisy," out of the garage, and applied water to its shell to cool it.

Investigators determined a heat lamp caused the fire. The damage was estimated to be $100.

There were no injuries in connection to the fire and the tortoise is OK.
