An arson suspect accused of pouring gasoline on a man and lighting him on fire after being asked to leave a southeast Portland apartment is now facing charges of attempted murder.

Joshua Bigsby, 28, was previously charged with arson, assault, burglary, criminal mischief and reckless endangering. He was arraigned Wednesday on additional charges including six counts of attempted murder.

Court documents state a couple met Bigsby at the Fortune Star Lounge and invited him back to their apartment near Southeast 157th and Division Street.

An altercation ensued, court documents state, and Bigsby was asked to leave, as well as three women with him.

Bigsby is then accused of returning with a gas can, kicking in the front door and pouring gasoline all over a man who was trying to hold the door closed, court documents state.

In a report from Close Street Supervision recommending Bigsby remain in custody pending the outcome of his criminal case, it states there were six people in the apartment at the time Bigsby started the fire, including two children, ages 3 and 6 years old.

The report states Bigsby was caught on camera returning to the apartment with a gas can in his hands and later running away, losing a shoe in the process that appeared to have caught on fire.

An adult jumped out of a second-story window to escape the fire, according to court documents.

Court documents state Bigsby has a 6-year-old daughter in Gresham and a 1-year-old son in Longview.

Close Street Supervision recommended he remain in custody, stating in a report that he is a risk to the community and the victims of this case.

Investigators said the man set on fire suffered second- and third-degree burns. The apartment sustained heavy damage in the fire.

A second suspect, Kayla Elmer, was also arrested and charged with first-degree arson in connection to this case.
