A driver was killed after crashing into a pole at Southeast 33rd and Powell Boulevard in Portland.
It happened just before 4 p.m. Wednesday.
"I was just making pizzas, and then the store shook and the clock fell off of the wall. So, I went around back, and I saw the car smashed in so I took off running," said witness Christopher Woods.
Woods says he was one of about 10 people working close by to where this all happened who ran to try to save the driver of the mangled car that was wrapped around a pole.
"I went to get to the guy cause he was still breathing, but you couldn’t move him. There was a beam going across him, so there was no moving him, it was really really sad," said Woods.
Woods says as hard as the group tried, they couldn’t free the unconscious driver. So, instead, he says they shielded the car from traffic until investigators arrived.
The driver was later pronounced dead at the scene.
Eastbound traffic on Powell Boulevard was shut down and westbound traffic was experiencing significant delays while the Major Crash Team conducted an investigation.
Drivers were encouraged to use alternate routes, including Southeast Division Street and Holgate Boulevard.
The road reopened by 7:15 p.m.
The cause of the crash is still under investigation. Police aren't planning on releasing the driver's identity until family has been notified.
