Police: 9-year-old reports being chased by man in St. Johns neighborhood

Portland Police Youth Services Division officers said they received a report of a 9-year-old boy who reported that a man tried to grab him off of his bike in the St. Johns neighborhood on Wednesday.

Officers said when they spoke to the boy, he told police he was riding his bike to school between 9:30 a.m. and 10 a.m., near North St. Johns Ave. and Smith Street when a man jumped out of the bushes and chased him down the street.

The boy told police that he fell off his bike, got back on and rode away to his school as the suspect chased him for two blocks.

Officers said the boy described the suspect as an African American man in his 30s, 5'10", 240 pounds, wearing a black ski mask, a black button-up dress shirt, black sweat pants, and black shoes.

Officers checked the neighborhood but did not find anyone matching the suspect's description and did not find any homes or businesses with surveillance video.

No witnesses of the incident have been found. There have been no similar reports of this activity in the neighborhood.
