Families scramble to find child care with Kelso teachers on strike

Posted: Updated:
KELSO, WA (KPTV) -

With Kelso teachers going on strike Wednesday, many families had to scramble to find child care.

Luckily, district leaders made the call early on Tuesday to cancel school, but it was still a race for families with young children to come
up with a plan.

So when members of SEIU 925 – a local union that represents licensed child care providers – heard about the strike, they jumped into action.

“As soon as we heard there may be a need, we contacted our providers and asked if they had room and spots that could be filled and they said 'yes,'" said union member Shawn Nyman. “So we had three or four that responded and we have that information available for parents that need it.”

Kelso area day care directors that FOX 12 spoke with over the phone Wednesday said most of the extra kids they took in Wednesday are children who’ve been part of their summer programs.
