Three men credited with thwarting a terror plot on a French train last month, including a member of the Oregon National Guard, were honored at the Pentagon and White House Thursday.

Oregon National Guard Specialist Alek Skarlatos of Roseburg, Airman First Class Spencer Stone and Anthony Sadler received three separate awards for the heroic act.

"It's these kinds of young people that make me extraordinarily optimistic and hopeful about our future,” President Barack Obama said. “And I want to thank each and every one of them and wish them well."

The men were gathering for a reunion in Europe when they spotted a gunman carrying an assault weapon on the Paris bound train.

The friends, along with a British passenger, tackled, beat and tied up the suspect. Four people were hurt in the melee, but no one died.

President Obama also welcomed the trio to the Oval Office for a private photo.

Skarlatos and the other heroes were also awarded the Legion of Honor, France’s highest recognition.
