LONGVIEW, WA (KPTV) -

Longview firefighters credit two Good Samaritans with saving a man whose canoe capsized on the Cowlitz River Thursday evening.

Longview Police and Fire said officers, paramedics and firefighters were called out around 6:30 p.m. after a witness reported seeing a man holding onto an overturned canoe and calling for help.

As emergency personnel arrived on the scene and began searching, two Kelso residents heading upriver to do some fishing spotted the man, who was not wearing a life jacket, firefighters said.

Firefighters said Tim and Karlita Courser pulled the man on board their boat, wrapped him in jackets and turned on a heater to help warm him up.

Firefighters said the man explained he had been fishing and was trying to reach for a fish when he fell out of the canoe.

The victim was taken to St. John Medical Center by ambulance.

Officials declined to identify the man, citing federal privacy laws.

Firefighters said the Coursers recovered the man's canoe and fishing gear and helped transport them to the Longview Fire Department for safekeeping.
