Eastmoreland neighbors sign deal that saves sequoias

PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

The deal is official.

Neighbors of Eastmoreland said that as of Friday night the papers to save three sequoias in their neighborhood have been signed.

It was an emotional scene following the announcement that was made earlier in the evening that the neighbors agreed to buy back the land from a developer.

The man the group called “Lorax Dave” came down as he promised to do once papers were signed. He was strapped 40 feet up on one of the sequoias since Tuesday afternoon.

One of the leading activists behind the protest, Arthur Bradford, said Dr. Seuss was a big inspiration for them.

“Just last night, I read the Lorax again. I don't think I can read this without crying now, but we should all remember it,” he told the crowd. “The Lorax says 'Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better, it's not.’”

The neighbors celebrated the deal by leaving a Lorax in the tree in the same place the tree-sitting protester stayed for days.
