PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

A Portland man was arrested Tuesday evening and is accused of pouring gasoline on his girlfriend, then attempting to light her on fire.

According to court documents, Joshua Stritmater, 26,  poured gasoline on his girlfriend’s head after she tried to drive off in her car during an argument in northeast Portland.

Stritmater then pulled out a torch-style lighter to ignite a flame but it failed, his girlfriend said.

She then ran to a friend’s house for help.

Officials say Stritmater later showed up at the friend’s house and hid under the bed.

Police then arrived and arrested him on charges of first-degree assault and attempted first-degree arson.

Stritmater admitted to pouring has on his girlfriend earlier that day, but claimed he did not try to set her on fire.
