CORVALLIS, OR (KPTV) -

Second Lieutenant Deanna Hollman has made history this week after graduating to become the first woman in the Oregon National Guard to go into combat arms as a field artillery officer.

She graduated from the US Army ROTC at Oregon State University on Friday.

Hollman is from Bend, and she no idea that she was making history until right before graduation.

Her motivation for joining the Oregon National Guard was simply the appeal of work that out of the ordinary.

"There are some jobs in the military that didn't appeal to me because I could do the same thing as a civilian," Holman said. "Those type of jobs are not why I wanted to go into the military. Field artillery seemed different and unique."
