GRESHAM, OR (KPTV) -

A SWAT standoff with a man accused of stabbing a woman at a Gresham apartment complex ended with the suspect being found dead inside the home from a self-inflicted knife wound.

Police were called out to the 200 block of Southeast Vista Avenue at 2:50 p.m. Sunday on reports of a domestic disturbance.

When officers arrived, they learned a woman was taken to the hospital with possible life-threatening stab wounds.

On Monday, officers said Mariya Dela Torriente, 19, remained in the hospital in critical condition with multiple stab wounds.

Investigators learned the suspect was in a relationship with the victim. Police said he retreated into the apartment they shared and did not respond to officers who called for him to come out.

SWAT was activated and eventually made entry into the apartment, where they found the man dead.

Police said Monday that 23-year-old Umberto Arango-Velasco died of a self-inflicted knife wound.

No other information was released by investigators.
