Fire destroys floating homes on Columbia River

VANCOUVER, WA (KPTV) -

At least three families will have to look for new places to live after fire destroyed two floating homes and badly damaged another Sunday night.

Firefighters responded to Kadow's Marina on Northwest Lower River Road around 10:30 p.m.

Firefighters said they knew right away the location would be an issue for them. Even though the homes were on the water, firefighters said they couldn't simply pump water out of the river.

Crews called out a second alarm and brought in water tenders since there aren't any fire hydrants in the area.

Together with fire boats from Vancouver and Portland, more than 30 firefighters worked to put out the fire.

By the time the flames were out, two homes were destroyed and a third was heavily damaged.

Firefighters said everyone was able to escape from the homes safely and there were no reports of any injuries.

The American Red Cross responded to assist the displaced families.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
